Dethroned smartphone leader Nokia is hoping to stage a fightback against its young pretenders with the unveiling of its first Windows 8 smartphone.

The Lumia 920 is intended to take on Apple and Google Android based devices head on in the cut-throat market and boasts several eyecatching features to tempt the punters.

These include the use of bold colours and a hi tech wireless induction pad for recharging the phones battery which both Microsoft and Nokia hope will give them an edge.

Nokia’s smartphone sales have dipped by nearly a fifth to £5.97bn over the year, making this new device the last chance saloon to stem its decline.

Nokia also hope to reverse their slow decline with the release of a number of tablets and ‘hybrid’ mobile devices.
