Marks & Spencer is to give itself a digital makeover in an effort to marry its internet and high street operations.

This will see the retailer introduce wi-fi in all its stores as well as issue its customer assistants with iPads in a bid to improve its service.

The technology is being trialled from today at M&S’s flagship Cheshire Oaks store following its unveiling by chief executive Marc Bolland.

It is hoped that customers will log into the stores website from their smartphones or consult with an assistant to browse the firms full stock range.

M&S is currently investing £100m in new technology and £150m on a new web platform that should be ready by 2014 as it pushes to grow its e-commerce sales to £1bn.

A £500m store modernisation programme is also planned.
