Hugh Grant has followed up his impassioned appearance at the Leveson Inquiry by becoming a board member of Hacked Off, a press standards campaign group.

The group is expanding in order to establish itself as a full-time operation and will be given funding directly from the Four Weddings and a Funeral star.

Grant acts as the public face of the agency, which is seeking to bring Britain’s wayward tabloids to heel whilst they remain under the microscope at Leveson.

Brian Cathcart, co-founder of Hacked Off, said: “All previous press inquiries have ended with the report being shoved on academics' shelves and we've got to do something different this time.”

Hacked Off is opposing proposals to create a new self-regulatory body for the industry which has been backed by most newspaper groups.
