The Herald and The Sunday Herald now classified as regional by ABCs as circulations continue to decline across newspaper industry

Newsquest Herald & Evening Times has seen its titles been The Herald and The Sunday Herald reclassified as regional titles by ABC amidst declining circulation figures in recent months.

The Glasgow based newspapers will be categorised in the same field as sister title The Evening Times, and as a result have not appeared in the national audit results, released today.

The Drum understands that the newspaper's figures may be revealed every six months going forward.

The average circulation figures for the newspapers last month saw the Sunday Herald fall to 26,074 while The Herald has 44,283.

National Daily tabloids from Trinity Mirror, The Mirror and The Daily Record have been seen circulation declines over the last year, according to figures for July, declining by 7.30 percent (1,085,698) and 9.32 percent (309,926) respectively. News International rival The Sun has also fallen by 7.86 per cent. The Daily Star recorded the largest tabloid decline over the last year, at 13.01 percent (612,945).

The Independent has witnessed its circulation decline over the last twelve months by nearly half, falling by 47.19 percent to 95,380, although part of this is due to the rise of its new stablemate i – now selling 272,893 copies on average, an increase of 58.34 percent.

The Daily Express declined by 7.87 percent to 576,698 and The Daily Mail by 5.46 percent to 1,946,434.

All other national morning quality titles have also continued to see a fall in circulation – The Daily Telegraph down by 8.50 percent (576,902)), The Financial Times down by 16.31 percent (305,408), The Guardian down by 17.47 percent (213,853) and The Times by 10.65 percent (391,498). The Scotsman’s circulation has also declined by 11.40 percent, to 36,170.

The Sunday titles have fared little better, with only The Daily Star reporting growth at 494,954 (+37.72 percent), while The Sun on Sunday recorded a circulation of 2,308,567.

The Sunday Mail fell by 12.48 percent to 325,054, the Sunday Mirror by 2.13 percent to 1,172,184 and The People by 6.46 percent to 497,860.

The Sunday Express reached 520,327 (-8.07 percent), The Sunday Post saw a decline of 11.09 percent to reach 276,195 and the Mail on Sunday now has 1,820,257 average sales, a decline of 7.71 percent on 2011.

The Independent on Sunday slumped to a decline of 20.51 percent at 123,017, while The Observer fell by 15.39 percent to 249,464. Scotland on Sunday now has 45,382 sales (-14.36) and The Sunday Telegraph has 453,478 (-9.20). The Sunday Times, still the highest selling National Sunday Quality title, reported below a million sales, at 928,776 – a decline of 9.20 percent.
