Facebook has begun peppering advertising into its users' newsfeeds in the latest bid by the social media giant to monetise its product.

This will see products and brands sandwiched between the viral vids and family snaps which has made the site such a success.

Companies will be offered the chance to buy such slots to direct traffic to their business, even if the individuals haven’t subscribed to those firms wares.

It is a significant change to the previous system which limited such advertisements to a separate sidebar.

Sophia Amin, director of marketing and communications at the Internet Advertising Bureau, told The Drum: "Like most content on the Internet, Facebook is free for users and powered by advertising. The trick here is to strike the right balance.

"Inserting ads into newsfeeds will undoubtedly achieve extensive reach for advertisers, but the added intrusiveness may put off some users. Hence why Facebook are running the tests."

Denying claims that the measure would prove off-putting to users a Facebook spokesperson said that “limits” would be established to prevent such posts dominating.
