Online TV and movies service, Blinkbox, has agreed a major deal with programme maker HBO to screen programmes such as Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire before their DVD release.

Sky will retain the rights to broadcast HBO shows on TV and offer them via video-on-demand as part of its deal agreed last year for channel, Sky Atlantic.

The deal means UK consumers will now be able to buy whole seasons or individual episodes of HBO shows, without subscription, via Blinkbox.

HBO director of international digital distribution, Colin Smith, said that he was "delighted" to partner with Tesco-owned, Blinkbox, adding: "HBO delivers innovative, critically-acclaimed programming and it is part of our ongoing strategy to make this content available to viewers in a variety of formats so they can immerse themselves in their favourite shows whenever, wherever.

"Fans will now be able to own their favourite series in digital format."
