Last night’s Big Brother final drew less than two million viewers, making it the least watched final ever. The 90 minute broadcast between 9pm and 10:30pm was watched by an average audience of just 1.5 million viewers, a 6.9 per cent share.

Peaking at just 1.76 million viewers, the figures are down on last year’s final which was watched by, a then record low, of 2.05 million. The figures show a disappointing end to the Channel 5 series which managed to attract a launch with 3 million viewers back in June.

The ailing series, which moved from Channel 4 to Channel 5 in early 2011, was also badly affected throughout its run by the Olympics hitting lows of less than half-a-million viewers per show.

Sunday’s penultimate instalment which went head-to-head with the Olympic Closing Ceremony was the least watched episode in Big Brother history. The show’s viewing figures hit record highs in 2002, during series three when 5.8 million people tuned in.

Channel 5 is now concentrating on Wednesday evening’s Celebrity Big Brother launch.
