A South Yorkshire weekly newspaper journalist has been appointed editor of The Shetland Times.

Adam Civico, who is assistant editor, digital at the Brantley Chronicle will take up the Lerwick-based post in October.

He grew up in Barnsley and has spent most of his life there, starting at the Chronicle as a junior reporter nine years ago.

Adam said: “I have always had an ambition to be an editor and the opportunity came up and I thought it was too good to be missed.

“It is an absolutely fantastic place. There’s a real sense of community and I think the paper reflects that.

“It is a much smaller community and much less busy. I think there’s a lot less crime and I am sure it is a bit more laid back but I am not expecting that to be the case at the paper."

He will replace Paul Riddell as editor, who is leaving after four years.
