A nationwide survey by Skills Solutions, Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce’s training provider, has found the marketing bosses are beginning to change their attitudes when it comes to hiring apprentices over graduates.

A total of 1,000 businesses were surveyed nationwide, and findings show that over half of marketing bosses are now seeing the value of real on-the-job training and a viable alternative to traditional academic education.

Apprenticeships are often viewed as a foot in the door for people looking to train in a specific area, but they can also provide career progression and longevity, as 58 per cent of marketing bosses were found to have promoted their trainees to management posts.

Over half of those taking part were found to have been surprised and impressed by the quality and usefulness of trainees entering their businesses. Sarah Turner, business development manager for apprenticeship at Skills Solutions, commented: “University fees are on the increase and many potential students and employers are now beginning to look into alternative training options. A university degree does not guarantee you a job, which unfortunately many graduates are now discovering.

“An apprenticeship however, offers qualifications, money while you train and a real career at the end of the process.”
