Wonga’s £1m sponsorship of ITV Gameshow Red or Black has come under fire from Twitter users questioning whether the short loan brand should be allowed to support a gambling programme.

Since the announcement of the deal to back the programme’s second series was announced, a series of messages have been sent to the hosts of the programme Ant and Dec on Twitter rebuking them for the deal, while other messages questioning whether the sponsorship should be allowed have also been sent.

Said the Labour MP Stella Creasy on Twitter; “@antanddec inappropriate to be sponsored by #wonga especially considering young fans”, while another message from @andrewthomson94 read “@antanddec Please do all you can to stop Wonga from sponsoring red or black. They are loan sharks.”

The new series will begin this Saturday, with the deal having been negotiated by PHD and idents created by Albion.

"We're pleased to be supporting such a big show, which, like our service, has been a hit with a mainstream audience from the beginning,” said Darryl Bowman, head of marketing at Wonga.com.

"The new 'Red or Black?' will guarantee viewers a big Saturday night and a must-watch evening of TV,” he added.
