The BBC has logged its highest viewing figures of the Olympics thus far, clocking up some 17.1m people who tuned to watch Mo Farah win the 10,000m.

It followed a spectacular night of athletics success for Britain begun by Jessica Ennis who secured gold in the heptathlon just an hour beforehand in the company of 16m viewers.

In a tweet BBC Olympics head Roger Mosey described the figures as “stunning” following a peak of 26.9m who tuned in to watch the opening ceremony.

Records have also been broken online with the BBC Sport website racking up 8m hits, well above the previous record of 5.7m.

This has led to some 29m requests for interactive video streams via the site; including 729,000 keen to relive Bradley Wiggins’s win.
