An internet troll, who took to Twitter to abusively express his displeasure at Olympic diver Tom Daley’s failure to secure a synchronised platform medal, has been handed an harassment order by police.

This bars the individual from making further abusive remarks pending additional investigations into other messages relating to his account.

The 17 year old was arrested yesterday in Dorset on suspicion of malicious communications after a message was sent to Daley saying: “You let your dad down I hope you know that."

Daley’s father died of brain cancer last year.

Dorset Police have themselves been criticised however for wasting resources on a trivial case with Robert Sharp, from English Pen, a writers’ association, saying: “People often choose to express themselves in this manner and the police cannot investigate every outburst.

“In the case of Tom Daley, one has to ask whether these tweets were genuine threats to another person, or simply a rant.

“Tom Daley showed a lot of class in responding to the trolls. He re-tweeted the offensive comments and the Twitter troll received a social humiliation at the hands of Tom’s many fans. This kind of punishment is usually better than involving the law."
