Sir Martin Sorrell, chief executive of WPP, has cited Danny Boyles Olympic opening ceremony as providing a major fillip to ‘BRAND Britain’.

Describing the live event as a ‘thinking man’s’ ceremony Sorrell said the smorgasbord of British history, culture and creativity had done ‘a lot of good’ for the country’s international reputation.

Speaking at the British Business Conference Sorrell said: “Whatever the controversies were, it was the thinking man or woman’s ceremony. If the object of advertising is to get yourself talked about, it worked.”

Sorrell also admitted that WPP’s remuneration committee had erred by failing to talk to enough shareholders about his firms pay policy.

The country’s most successful adman is currently in the process of making adjustments to his £13m a year pay packet after 60% of them rebelled against the package.
