Police are investigating a Twitter message sent to Olympic diver Tom Daley stating that he let his late father down after failing to win a medal in the men’s synchronised 10m platform diving event yesterday.

Daley, who alongside partner Pete Waterfield finished fourth in the event, retweeted a message from Riley69 which read; “You let your dad down i hope you know that.”

Daley’s father, who he had always cited as an influence in his career, died last year from brain cancer.

The same tweeter also accused Daley of being ‘over hyped’ but following messages from other users began to apologise to the diver.

“I'm sorry mate i just wanted you to win cause its (sic) the olympics I'm just annoyed we didn't win I'm sorry tom accept my apology,” was a subsequent tweet.

Another read; "please i don't want to be hated I'm just sorry you didn't win i was rooting for you pal to do britain all proud just so upset."

Dorset Police have confirmed that it is investigating the messages.
