A survey of current trends in the mobile advertising industry has found that mobile advertising is set to double in 2012 on the back of the increasing ubiquity of smartphones.

Compiled by BuzzCity the report bases its findings on their own global ad network, which has already served three quarters of its annual traffic from last year in the first half of this year.

Growth is being driven by a number of emerging markets, notably Costa Rica, which grew 104% in Q2, Malaysia (56%), Brazil (33%) and Turkey (18%).

The UK is the world’s second most mature smartphone market behind Saudi Arabia with 90% of devices falling into this bracket,

Commenting on the report BuzzCity CEO Dr KF Lai, said: "We are seeing no signs of mobile advertising slowing down across the globe. Smartphones usage is becoming mainstream but key to driving further growth will be the creation of original local content.

“Marketers who engage their users with compelling content beyond conventional mobile advertising norms will be the ones to stand out from the rest of the pack and win out in this growing market opportunity."
