They may be a staple of the British diet but chips are likely to be in short supply at this Summer’s Olympic Games – and not because of any health considerations.

Instead organisers of the Games have handed down a decree stipulating that chips in all forms are not allowed within the Games perimeter (with the exception of a fish & chips ‘loophole’) as McDonald’s have a monopoly on the delicacy through their sponsorship deal.

In a statement Games organisers said: “Due to sponsorship obligations with McDonald’s, LOCOG habe instructed the catering team that they are no longer able to serve chips on their own anywhere within the Olympic Park.

“The only loophole to this is if it is served with fish”.

LOCOG ends the statement with a plea to chip starved spectators not to abuse staff for failing to dish up a poke of chips on demand.
