BBC internet services have been hit by a number of serious glitches that caused parts of the main website and iPlayer offline for up to two hours last night.
The technical difficulties also affected the news websites ‘most popular’ stories tab, with old stories being incorrectly placed to the fore.
Problems first arose from 20:00 when site content first became unavailable, prompting engineers to scramble to rectify the issue.
They managed to patch most of the problems by 21:00 but sections of the site were still temperamental through to 22:00.
In a statement from the BBC said: "Due to a major technical issue, BBC Online was temporarily down on Wednesday evening. Service was restored to most users within an hour. We are working on full restoration as quickly as possible, and are investigating the causes of the outage."
The BBC is no stranger to technical difficulties, a similar hiccup downed services back in March 2011.
