American broadcaster NBC is to team up with social media giant Facebook to bolster its coverage of the London Olympics.

The tie-up will see NBC encourage its viewers to discuss the Games on the social network whilst Facebook users will be guided toward NBC’s coverage of events in kind.

More than just a traffic generator however data gleaned from online discussions will directly inform television coverage on NBC, including a ‘Facebook Talk Meter’ intended to reflect what is being said online.

NBC Olympics president Gary Zenkel insisted that no money would exchange hands under the deal, it being purely a marketing iniotiative, he said: “We know that a social conversation will surround the Olympics.

“Facebook has the attention of a large portion of the American audience.”
