BBC News controller Kevin Bakhurst has announced that he is to step down from his role after the Olympics in order to join Irish public service broadcaster RTE.

Bakhurst, who began life at the BBC back in 1989 as a researcher, will assume the position of managing director of news and current affairs at RTE after the Olympics.

Since 2010 Bakhurst has also been deputy head of the newsroom, overseeing TV news, radio news and the BBC News website.

Commenting on his departure Bakhurst said: “I have had a tremendous time at BBC News and would like to thank my colleagues and teams there - in particular on the BBC News Channel - for their terrific work, commitment and support.”

RTE director general Noel Curran, Bakhurst had been plucked from “an exceptionally strong field of national and international candidates” for his “huge and varied experience, proven track record and key leadership skills”.

Director of BBC News Helen Boaden said of bakhurst: “His professionalism, his excellent judgment and his enthusiasm will be missed by all who've had the privilege of working with him. Under Kevin's leadership the News Channel has gone from strength to strength, cementing its reputation at the heart of the BBC's television news.

“While I am sad to see him go, he has an exciting challenge ahead and all his colleagues will wish him well for the future.”
