The Scotsman, owned by Johnston Press, has confirmed that it pick up the price of the mistake made on Saturday’s edition of the newspaper where the wrong price was placed on the cover.

The cover of editions released in the North and the West featured the weekday price of £1, rather than the standard Saturday price of £1.30, a mistake that Scotsman managing director Andrew Richardson put down to human error.

Speaking to The Drum, Richardson explained that the mistake had happened during the print run of Saturday’s edition, but by the time it was picked up, the newspaper had already been sent out.

He added that it was likely to cost the company less than £10,000 having affected the west and north Scotland edition, but not the Edinburgh distributed copies. The barcode for the edition was believed to have been correct however.

“We are going to reimburse retailers in full for this with the 30p. We are setting that up now with the distributor Menzies,” he continued.

“It is understandable as people are under a lot of pressure and various things have conspired to make this happen. It’s obviously not something that we’re happy with. It’s embarrassing and we’re now going to do our best to make sure that it doesn’t happen again.”

The Saturday edition of the Scotsman is the most popular each week, with the ABC circulation figure in May hitting 45,812.
