A Phillip Watts Design concept store for savoury chain Greggs has opened its doors in Gosforth, near Newcastle - location of the first ever Greggs unit back in 1951.
Named simply as Greggs The Bakery, the store is intended to flaunt Greggs' baking credentials and incorporates displays of fresh bread and confectionary running around the shop edge and in a central island unit.
An extra-long counter has also been incorporated to encourage browsing.
Décor is described as a blend of contemporary and traditional with timber paneling, Corian and Oak.
A number of props are also scattered throughout including an original bakers delivery bike and scales as well as counter fronts adorned with rolling pin/chopping board reliefs.

I want to go to there...

Interesting. I wonder if we will see an increase in prices, to match it's fancy new decor?

The store looks great. Nice large doorway for buggies and wheelchairs, friendly staff, great store layout. But the very busy dual carriage way road outside the store creates quite a bit of noise.

Nice to see another Liz Lemon fan on here.

Yeah but are the sausage rolls hot like they used to be in bakeries as I've yet to get a decent one at a decent temperature in the last few years.
Also I bet the quality of the stuff doesn't change back to when there was actual meat in them.
At the moment this is all the info they have on their site for their sausage rolls:
Product weight: 103g, Energy: 1470 KJ/360 kcal, Protein: 8.5g, Carbohydrate: 24g, Fat: 25g, Salt: 2.2g.

would be nice to see a % of actual meat!

I got into an argument with the wife over my assumption that you can guage social class by choice of bakeries - there's one up here in Glasgow that charges over a quid for a doughnut - but what a doughnut..! Similalrly their steak-bake equivalent probably contains a 4oz rib-eye judging by the price. Although the same cannot be said for Greggs, I couldn't argue with the wife's counter argument that it is the everyman (well... she said the Metro) of Bakers, as pretty much everyone has bought from there at one time or another.

Quality or cost that's what it really boils down to now and for some reason there isn't really a third happy medium option around any more (well not one I've found).
Can anyone recommend a bakers that is actually good quality for a decent price or should I say good value?

I find Aulds are actually pretty decent and their steak bakes have much better quality meat in them and they are generally bigger for about the same price.

What ever you do don't buy the frozen Greggs stuff from I think it's Farmfoods. In fact you might get your meat content from the box...!

Already made that mistake and to be honest I didn't pay attention to the meat % content, but I can say is that they are even worse than the fresh ones.
