The NUJ has announced another round of strike ballots, this time in Sheffield, after Johnston Press announced plans to reduce jobs at a range of local newspapers; including titles in the Northern Midlands and South Yorkshire.

This would see two chief photographers lost as well as production staff and planners as the publisher looks to reorganise departments in response to workflow.

Journalists affected by the latest announcements work at the Doncaster Free Press, Derbyshire Times, Sheffield Star and sister paper the Sheffield Telegraph.

Chris Morley, NUJ Northern Organiser said: "Although good progress was made in talks with the company about eliminating the need to make compulsory redundancies at Sheffield, the chapel was not sufficiently reassured at this stage that all its members would have their situation resolved to their satisfaction.

"We are therefore conducting a ballot for industrial action at Sheffield Newspapers to safeguard our members against the prospect of forced job losses until we have complete assurance otherwise."
