Brand development directors in marketing in London can be earning up to £160k a year, while digital marketing directors can be earning up to £120k – compared to £100k last year, the Robert Walters 2012 Salary Survey revealed today.

The survey found that permanent marketing salaries grew 1.1 per cent in London in 2011, while pay for contractors rose 3.4 per cent in the same period.

Tim Gilbert, director of marketing recruitment at Robert Walters, said: “With market conditions remaining challenging, the fact that marketing pay is on the rise in London – albeit at a relatively slow pace on the permanent side – is encouraging. The rise in contract rates reflects where employers’ priorities lie at the moment. They are focusing on discernible return on investment meaning contractors who can come in and deliver a project within a set time frame are valued at the moment.

“This focus on ROI is also what has driven increases in digital marketing jobs and salaries. Professionals with search engine optimisation and/or pay per click experience – whose work can be measured easily – are particularly in demand for these roles.”

The survey predicted a continuation of existing marketing conditions for the sector.
