Apple could be poised to up the ante in its increasingly fierce fight with Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Google’s Nexus 7 after reports emerged it was preparing to launch a 7” device this Christmas.

A source told Bloomberg that the new model would have a screen around 7” in length across the diagonal, significantly less than the 9.7” of standard models.

The smaller device is also unlikely to have the so called ‘retina display’ of high density pixels – although it may play host to the same number of pixels as the iPad2.

Apple currently controls 61% of the tablet market, which is expected to grow to $66.4bn this year.

Amazon’s Kindle Fire, which is available for just $200 in the US, has been selling well as consumers seek a device that focusses on the display of books, TV and film sourced direct from the online retailer.

Google will launch its Nexus 7 rival on July 17 for £159.
