Following a two-year transition period ,which ended this week, organic food producers are now legally required to display the European Union's "Euro leaf' on all pre-packaged organic food products produced in EU member states.

The European Commission gave organic food producers two years to add the logo to their packaging, following the scheme’s launch in July 2010.

However some complained that the new logo would confuse consumers and not have the same level of recognition as established national schemes. As such, existing national logos for organic food have been allowed to appear next to the green logo, featuring the 12 EU stars in the shape of a leaf.

The design of the logo was determined in an online competition organised by the European Commission, where around 130,000 people voted for German student Dusan Milenkovic's entry.
