Fears have been raised that the exclusion of David Beckham from Team GB’s football squad could affect ticket sales for the London 2012 Games.

Beckham, who was widely expected to be in the squad having described it as the final dream of his career to play in the Olympics, has been omitted by manager Stuart Pearce, to a wide outcry from media and fans alike.

Match of the Day presenter and former England striker Gary Lineker tweeted: “Terrible shame for Beckham having given so much to the Olympic bid and football.”

Beckham had been involved in the Olympic bid to bring the Games to London, as part of the delegation that travelled to Singapore in 2005.

It is now feared that people expecting to see Beckham play in the Olympics will no longer look to buy tickets with none of the football matches understood to have sold out yet.

Team GB has been drawn in Group A of the football tournament against Senegal, Uruguay and United Arab Emirates.
