The PRCA has backed the CIPR’s guidelines for PR professionals on editing Wikipedia pages, recommending that they should refrain from directly editing pages for brands or clients that they work with.

The guidelines include a number of recommendations created through global support, which aims to build an understanding between Wikipedia users and the PR industry, and recommends that recommendations be made to those who edit the site by PR professionals, rather than directly editing entries on behalf of clients.

Danny Whatmough, chairman of the PRCA Digital Skills Group, said: “These guidelines represent an important step forward in improving the relationship between the PR industry and Wikipedia. We would encourage PR professionals, and PRCA members in particular, to review the guidelines and get involved in the discussion. This collaborative process will ensure PR agencies have clear guidance when using Wikipedia and will also help them develop better relationships with members of the Wikimedia community.”
