First Minister Alex Salmond, architect of a proposed referendum on Scottish independence in 2014, has denounced former chancellor Alistair Darling’s ‘Better Together’, counter campaign as “threadbare”.

Salmond made the remarks in the wake of Darling declaring that independence was an “inadequate response”, accusing the group of being “Tory-led”.

Darling has stated that he is intent on mounting a positive campaign which celebrates “not just what makes us distinctive but also celebrates what we share".

Darling added: “We are positive about our links with the rest of the United Kingdom, through families and friendships, through trade and through shared political, economic and cultural institutions."
