Acer founder Stan Shih has reacted to the recent announcement of Microsoft’s Surface tablet line-up by claiming that the sole intent of the device is to tempt third party device makers to produce their own Windows 8 tablets – then promptly withdraw.

Speaking to Digitimes Shih said Microsoft: "has no real intention to sell own-brand tablet PCs. Once the purpose is realized, Microsoft will not offer more models."

Backing up his claims Shih said that Microsoft enjoys higher profits licensing software than manufacturing hardware, giving the firm “no reason” to go down the latter route.

Shih added: “Vendors adopting Windows 8 should interpret Microsoft's intentions positively, as they will benefit from Microsoft's marketing.”
