Virgin Media will next month release a mobile app featuring built in augmented reality (AR) functions.

The app follows the one released in January alongside Virgin Media Magazine, which also included AR functions offering users a video introduction to the magazine by Virgin founder Richard Branson, movie trailers and the chance to blow up a virtual 3D model of the Eiffel Tower.

Speaking at this year’s AR Summit in London this week, Natasha Conetta, head of customer communications at Virgin Media told The Drum that the strategy for the Unmissable App was being devised alongside Redwood, and highlighted the growing importance of AR content.

“The new Virgin Media app will highlight how our customers can get the most from their Virgin Media package, and encourage them to discover more of the things they love,” commented Conetta.

“The addition of AR functionality will make engagement with our brand simpler, more fun, and more immersive, and this app opens up the possibility of the tech being used in all of our direct marketing channels.”

The app will be the latest element in Virgin Media’s’s integrated customer communications programme that includes the bi-monthly magazine and its weekly Virgin Media Presents email newsletter.

The app will be released on both iOS and Android formats and made available through to customers to download through iTunes and Google Play next month.
