The UK economy has benefited from an injection of an additional £700m in tourism spend spurred by four days of Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The figures, compiled by Sky News, are based on evidence that four million people took an overnight trip during the period, spending an average of £175 each.

Nevertheless separate research published by the Centre for Economics and Business Research revealed that the economy as a whole takes a £2.3bn hit for every bank holiday.

Sarah Long, a spokesperson for VisitEngland, said: “The jubilee celebrations have captivated audiences at home and around the world, and will hopefully attract increased visitor numbers for years to come.”
