UK advertising and marketing is teeming with individuals with all matter of prefixes or letters after their names, from doctors and fellows to politically exposed persons such as Lord Saatchi. But what accolade could be bigger than a place on the Queen’s honours list? Here we speak to some of the Queen’s favourite marketers.

Farah Ramzan Golant CBE, executive chairman, AMV BBDO

Farah Ramzan Golant CBE graduated from Emmanuel College, Cambridge with a degree in modern languages.This set her up perfectly for a career in advertising, which really got going in 1990 when she joined AMV.Over 21 years Farah has pitched for and led a whole breadth of the agency’s client base, both locally and globally. This includes Sainsbury’s, BT, Mars, J&J, Aviva, Mercedes, Starbucks and EDF Energy.As executive chairman of AMV BBDO she is leading the drive to develop creative competencies and grow with clients. This includes investment in new talent, new partnerships and an operating model that leverages the opportunities in the online/offline world of communications.Ramzan Golant is on the BBDO Worldwide Board and serves as a non-executive on the Board of Trustees of the National Theatre, the Cambridge Judge Business School and the Venture Board of Cancer Research UK.She sits on the BBDO Worldwide Board and serves on the Board of Trustees of the National Theatre, the Cambridge Judge Business School and the Venture Board of Cancer Research UK.In May 2011 she was awarded a CBE for services to the advertising industry.

Sir Christopher Powell, former chief executive, BMP DDB

Sir Christopher Powell was one of the founders of advertising agency Boase Massimi Pollitt (BMP) when it started in the late 60s.An early campaign created by BMP while underPowell’s management was for Smash, featuring potato-loving Martians – created by creative director John Webster and since voted Britain’s favourite.BMP was bought in 1989 by DDB Worldwide, part of Omnicom Group.Powell progressed to become BMP DDB’s CEO and subsequently chairman.BMP DDB was Labour’s advertising agency from 1972 to 1997 and Powell instrumental in launching a re-branded Britain with the catchphrase “Cool Britannia”.Since retiring from advertising in 2000, Powell been involved in all sorts including ASBOF, NESTA, NHS, Think Tankery, PLCs and start ups.Sir Christopher was knighted in January 2009 for services to advertising.

Judith Donovan CBE - founder of JDA

Judith Donovan CBE founded her own marketing agency in 1982 after nine years as a graduate employee in marketing in both London and Yorkshire. She was one of the first female entrepreneurs in Yorkshire and was recognised as such with awards for “Yorkshire Business Woman of the Year” and “Yorkshire Woman of the Year”; her business was twice featured in the Independent’s “100 Fastest Growing Companies”.In addition she chaired the Bradford Training and Enterprise Council, was the first ever female president of Bradford Chamber of Commerce and appeared on the panel of BBC’s “Question Time” twice.In 2000 she sold JDA (£12.5 million turnover, 50 staff) to her managers and embarked on a Public Sector NED career and has served/is serving on 15 Boards and has chaired/is chairing two of them. She has been a Millennium Commissioner, a director of HSE and the BIG Lottery Fund, chair of Yorkshire Tourist Board and vice chair of Postwatch. She is currently chair of Royal Mail’s Strategic Mailing Partnership, chair of Greater Ripon Improvement Partnership and chair of Fundraising Friends of St Andrew’s Church, as well as a director of British Wool Marketing Board and director of Legacy Trust UK. She is also a public member at Network Rail and a member of Ripon Cathedral Finance Board.Donovan was awarded the CBE in 1997. “I live by direct mail; I die by direct mail; so how appropriate that the greatest thrill and excitement of my life was receiving a letter from Downing Street saying the Queen was minded to grant me a CBE! (mind you, I use it in copywriting seminars on how not to as the first paragraph was only one sentence long but ran to six lines!). Without a doubt also the greatest day of my life when I went to the palace and received it.”

Cilla Snowball CBE - group chairman and group CEO, AMV BBDO

Cilla Snowball CBE heads up the Abbott Mead Vickers Group, one of the most respected advertising and communications groups in the UK, serving clients including Sainsbury’s, BT, Camelot, BBC, Diageo, The Economist and PepsiCo.She has worked for AMV for 20 years: initially as new business director, rising to agency head and now country head, with overall responsibility for the five communications companies that make up the AMV Group – AMV BBDO, Proximity, Redwood, Fishburn Hedges and Hub Plus. The advertising agency has held the number one position in the UK for 15 years.Snowball chairs the Advertising Association and sits on the boards of BBDO worldwide, Comic Relief and the Council of the University of Birmingham. She sits on the Home Office Women’s Business Council.She was awarded the CBE for services to the advertising industry in 2009.

Jonathan Sands OBE - chairman of Elmwood

Jonathan Sands OBE is chairman of brand design consultancy Elmwood, renowned for winning more DBA Design Effectiveness Awards than any other consultancy in the history of the scheme. Sands’s work takes him all around the world. Current Elmwood clients include Walmart, Kimberly Clark, Unilever, Ann Summers, Seven Seas and Cable & Wireless Communications, to name but a few.He led a management buyout of Elmwood in 1989 at the age of 28. Originally based out of one office in Leeds, the consultancy today has offices in London, NYC, Singapore and Melbourne. Elmwood is still headquartered in Yorkshire.Sands’s vision is for Elmwood to be the most effective brand design consultancy in the world.In the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List in January 2011 Sands was awarded the OBE for his outstanding services to the creative industry.“For me it was the most humbling professional experience of my life. To think that my peers would nominate me in the first place and that the nomination was supported is just incredibly humbling. I’m really not sure I will ever accept that I was worthy of such an honour but I was truly delighted to receive it. And I’m not giving it back!“It is certainly hugely satisfying that my gong shows that you don’t have to be based in London to be recognised in our industry. I think therefore that it is a great accolade for Elmwood and not just for me.”

Sir Martin Sorrell, chief executive of WPP

Sir Martin Sorrell founded WPP, the world’s largest advertising and marketing services group, in 1985 and has been chief executive throughout.WPP companies provide clients with advertising, media investment management, consumer insight, public relations and public affairs, branding and identity, healthcare communications, direct, interactive and internet marketing, and specialist communications services.WPP employs over 158,000 people in over 2,500 offices in 107 countries. The Group’s companies include JWT, Ogilvy & Mather Advertising, Y&R, Grey, Mindshare, MEC, MediaCom, Kantar, Wunderman, Burson-Marsteller, Hill+Knowlton Strategies, Landor, The Brand Union, G2, Fitch, The Partners and WPP Digital. Clients include 344 of the Fortune Global 500, 63 of the NASDAQ 100 and 33 of the Fortune e-50. In 2011, WPP had revenues of $16.1 billion and billings of $71.7 billion.Sir Martin actively supports the advancement of international business schools – advising Harvard, IESE, the London Business School and the Indian School of Business. He has been publicly recognised with a number of awards including the Harvard Business School Alumni Achievement Award.He received a knighthood in January 2000.

Andrew Brown CBE, former director general, Advertising Association

Andrew spent 45 years of his career working in the advertising business, two-thirds of which involved advertising self-regulation at one time or another. He joined J Walter Thompson in 1965 and spent most of the next 28 years in account management, with a four year stint in account planning. He was a board director for 10 years.In 1993 he left the agency world and became director general of the Advertising Association (until 2007) and became a member of the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) and the Advertising Standards Board of Finance.In 1999, Andrew was appointed chairman of CAP and chairman of the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice on its formation in 2004.During his time at CAP he oversaw major developments of the self-regulatory system; leading the industry task force that negotiated the ‘contracting out’ of broadcast advertising regulation from Ofcom; the extensive review of the Advertising Codes that were launched in revised form in 2010, and the extensions to the remit of the CAP Code to cover marketing communications on websites and in video-on-demand services.Andrew retired in March 2011. He was awarded a CBE in the 2012 New Years Honours List for services to the advertising industry.“When I joined the mailing department at JWT in 1965, I didn’t even think it would lead to a career in advertising, and certainly not a career in self-regulation or a CBE. But like all journeys, you don’t know where it will end up. Advertising became the business I loved, but I always wanted it to be honest and I’m proud that my involvement in self-regulation has helped that to happen. All those involved in self-regulation work hard to make it successful, I believe this award recognises everyone’s efforts.”

Sir John Hegarty - founder of BBH

Renowned creative Sir John Hegarty has been working in advertising since joining Benton and Bowles in 1965, before being fired not two years later. This led him to joined John Collings & Partners, and then Cramer and Saatchi in 1967, before the agency rebranded to the more recognisable moniker Saatchi & Saatchi, where he became a founding shareholder. He would go on to co-found TBWA in 1973, and then Bartle Bogle Hegarty nine years later. Hegarty has won numerous industry awards, as well as receiving the D&AD President Award for outstanding achievement; however the recognition by Her Majesty, the Queen will obviously be his proudest moment, awarded in 2007 in recognition to his services to the advertising and creative industries.
