Mobile app development agency Mubaloo last week ran its second series of seminars for the finance sector in London and Bristol. The session, entitled 'Mobile Apps in Financial Services: A Masterclass', covered some of the most pressing issues for firms pursuing a mobile strategy for customer facing, B2B and enterprise channels. Marketing, digital and IT professionals from across Financial Services heard from Mubaloo's mobile experts. The seminar covered all stages from the business case for an app through to security and multi-platform considerations. Here's some of the learnings taken from the day.

Create awareness

PR and reviews can make or break a campaign so piggyback your proven media channels so your app receives good press.

Achieve engagement

Give your audience a reason to want to use your app. Deliver an immediate benefit to your audience and then offer a hook or call to action while you have them engaged.

Customer value

Although targeting new customers is important, you want to make sure you are making the right moves to support your valued customers. It's a two way transaction, so whilst evolving your offering for mobile, be careful not to water down your brand value.

Forming new habits

It's all about self service and deeper engagement, allowing customers to manage their own day-to-day actions, leaving your team to add the personal touch for the bigger decisions.

Device and app security

Device security and app security are both equally important factors to consider when developing a mobile strategy for the enterprise or for your consumers. Security is an integral part of any app, especially one designed to store personal or corporate financial information. There are different issues to consider when thinking about app security compared to traditional web platforms but app security is completely attainable with a specialised approach.

Emergence of HTML5

Web apps built in HTML5 are continuing to grow in popularity as businesses are continually looking for new ways to develop mobile channels efficiently and cost-effectively.

Web & native apps don’t have to compete

Web and native apps do have similar functions but there are also some stark differences between the two. The approach you take will depend on the features your app needs. Both web and native apps can coexist together instead of being at war because they both have very different purposes.

Go native for integration

A native app is specifically designed to perform on a device’s operating system, which naturally makes it a smoother experience than a web app that is designed for all operating systems. Another advantage of a native app is its ability to integrate most of a device’s features such as the camera and accelerometer. Web apps only have access to a subset of these features.

Keep it simple with a web app

Web apps are made to work on any platform and to fit any screen, which means they may not look perfect on all devices. If all you require is a simple app with little native integration then a web app is your answer.

Future of native and web apps

As web technologies evolve and become a more useful way of delivering mobile applications, web apps will continue to increase in popularity. However, native apps will continue to reign because of feature integration and a smoother user experience.
