Bing has announced in a blog post that it is set to roll out a new design in the coming weeks, with the US to be the first to see it, followed by the system being rolled out for mobile devices.

Derrick Connell, corporate vice president for Bing and Dr. Harry Shum, corporate vice president of Bing R&D said in the post: “The new Bing introduces a brand new information architecture with a three column design that focuses on bringing you information from the web to help you take action and interact with friends and experts without compromising the core search experience.

“Instead of cluttering your results with social updates, we’re honoring the purity of the core web results making it easier to focus on the links you need to get things done.”

As well as the core results on the left, the new search system will include a ‘sidebar’ on the right hand side, allowing users to ask questions to their Facebook friends: “We want to make it easy for people to accomplish anything they set out to do by allowing them to tap into the wisdom of their friends and of the broader Web – the 95 percent of things people know but never write down.”

The middle column will be called ‘snapshot’, and will include ‘relevant information and services related to your search’, for example if searching for a restaurant, the column will bring up maps and ratings.

The pair concluded: “Finally, we have implemented technologies that provide relevant results while maximizing protection for your data and your privacy. When using Bing and signed into Facebook, Bing will only surface content your friends could access by viewing your Facebook profile directly.”
