Cadbury is encouraging the nation to write messages of support to the 900 athletes selected to make the British Olympic and Paralympic teams.

Pre-paid, addressed blank postcards have been distributed in special Cadbury Dairy Milk bars to retailers across the country.

Brits can also send messages of support via the cadburypostcards2012.co.uk microsite.

Norman Brodie, general manager Cadbury London 2012, said: "We want everyone to write and send a message of support for the nation’s athletes to motivate them as they enter their final months of training.”

Cadbury kicked off the campaign in March by creating a Shop of Cards in Covent Garden, constructed with London 2012 postcards.

Members of the public were encouraged to write messages of support by our celebrity shopkeeper Kirsty Gallacher, with thousands of postcards completed on the day.

The Shop will be making a return to the capital tonight, where it will appear outside the Royal Albert Hall for the British Olympic Association's Our Greatest Team Rises event, featuring a line-up of entertainers including Gary Barlow.

So far Cadbury has received 48,000 messages of support.

Shanaze Raede, BMX champion: “As we get nearer to the summer, my training regime gets really tough. In the most difficult times, the boost of knowing people are rooting for me really helps to keep me motivated. The messages coming through from Cadbury’s Postcards campaign are starting to create a real sense of excitement for me and other Team GB hopefuls. I’ve been reading and replying to some of the messages, and it means so much to know people have taken the time to show their support.
