Apple is believed to be rustling up designs for a scaled down 7.85” model of its popular iPad tablet computer – according to Apple blogger John Gruber.

Speaking during a podcast Gruber claimed that the diminutive update would carry the same screen resolution as the 9.7” iPad and iPad2 – just slightly less than the retina display in the firm’s most recent iPad model.

Such a device would compete head on with Amazon’s similarly scaled Kindle Fire.

If the gossip turns out to be true, a big if for a company which frequently dabbles in abortive tinkering, then it would mark a dramatic volte face from 2010 when Steve Jobs suggested that a 7” tablet would be “dead on arrival”.
