STV Productions has announced that it is to develop a historical drama series on famous Scot William Wallace, in association with Digital Rights Group (DRG), LA based Creative Media and Nine/8 Entertainment.

The series, to be called Wallace, will be created stylistically in the vein of Spartacus and Game of Thrones, and will show the backstory of the man, including his battles with King Edward The Longshank and his relationship with rival Robert the Bruce.

Alan Clements, director of content at STV, said: “This was a turbulent time in Scotland’s history, in which William Wallace had a starring and pivotal role. We plan to delve deep into his character and explore his passions, bringing parts of history to life in a spectacular and raw depiction. With all eyes on Scotland in the current political climate, this also seems to be a very appropriate time to tell this story in more depth.”

DRG is handling worldwide distribution and will be launching the title at MIP in April. Todd Berger, president of Creative Media, will executive produce the project along with Andrew Trapani and Brian Gilbert of Nine/8 Entertainment.

Berger said: “We all love the film Braveheart but there is much about Wallace that couldn’t be depicted due to time constraints and we look forward to exploring these areas.”
