Microsoft has unveiled the most significant redesign of its iconic Windows logo in over two decades, a clean blue design.

The new image will supplant the familiar red, green, blue and yellow design which has identified Windows start buttons for a generation – which is also being ditched incidentally.

Designed as an explicit statement of the software giants changed philosophy for Windows 8 the new look is intended to demonstrate a clean and understated new look that is in keeping with the ‘tile’ visual look of its smartphone interface.

Some however have questioned the sense in throwing away a brand identity that is instantly recognised by billions.
