He will take up the role in May, reporting to Tanya Cordrey, director of digital development.

Tanya Cordrey said: “Mike is a fantastic hire for the Guardian, and will bring with him a wealth of skills and experience that are completely in line with the Guardian’s forward-thinking approach towards digital innovation. Heading up our world-class engineering team, Mike’s role will accelerate our next generation of multi-platform digital plans, and we can’t wait to have him on board."

Mike Blakemore added: “The Guardian has long been a leader in digital publishing innovation, and one of the few media companies that truly understands the power and potential of the internet. I look forward to joining a talented team to continue to deliver great products to Guardian readers around the world.”
