Twitter saw a peak of 12,233 tweets per second during the final three minutes of this year’s Super Bowl, the social media service has announced, the largest number so far during the event.

Twitter revealed last night in a blog post that a spike within the final three minutes averaged at 10,000 tweets-per-second, while 8,000 tweets-per-second was the average during Madonna’s performance during halftime, with a peak of 10,245 tweets.

2008’s Super Bowl saw the largest spike of 27 tweets-per-second, while in 2011, 4,064 was the highest tweets-per-second count for any sporting event at the time.
