The Federation Against Copyright Theft (Fact) has said that 83 major companies, including Tesco, Vauxhall and BT, indirectly fund TV and film piracy because of where their online advertising appears.

According to the Daily Mail, the companies have said that they do not know everywhere that their adverts appear, and do take them down from these sites when it is noticed. FACT has said that the adverts provide revenue for the pirate websites.

While some companies, including Tesco and BT, have not responded to the watchdog, others – including Santander, Virgin Media, TfL, P&O Cruises and Microsoft – have responded positively. The Times has reported that these firms say they will stamp out the practice of having adverts on the piracy websites.
