Cravendale milk, which has sponsored the UK Barista Championships for six years, has announced that it will also support two candidates in the 2012 competition.

Cravendale found two budding baristas to enter into the competition as part of its Milk Matters campaign, which aims to communicate the specialness of Cravendale milk. Both candidates - Rachel Parker, a farmer’s daughter from Garstang in Lancashire and Philip Halhead, a farmer from Lancaster - are members of Arla Foods’ Milk Partnership (AFMP), a group of farmers who supply milk directly to Arla Foods, the company behind Cravendale milk.

Each barista is given a 15-minute performance where they are required to make a series of coffee based drinks for the judges to evaluate.

Liz Fletcher, assistant brand manager for Cravendale, said: “We’re proud of the fact that Cravendale makes the best cup of coffee and coffee shops are a key part of our business focus. That’s why we felt it was important to show our support amongst up and coming baristas.

“We believe Cravendale makes the best cup of coffee because of the way the milk froths, making frothier coffee than its competitors. We hope that Cravendale milk will help Rachel and Philip go all the way in this year’s championships and we wish them the best of luck!”

Paul Meikle -Janney, managing director of Coffee Community, added: “I’m thrilled to be involved in training Cravendale’s selected candidates for the championships this year. When we founded Coffee Community twelve years ago, barista training was unheard of so it’s great to see that the art is now getting some support.

“Through its sponsorship deal, Cravendale is offered to all UK Barista Championship candidates. I hope that through our rigorous training programme, Rachel and Philip will be able to show the other candidates the benefits of using Cravendale to make a coffee!”
