Facebook has published a list of the top 10 news items, topics and cultural trends (ie memes) to be shared by its army of 800m users over the course of 2011.

Like My Status: Memology 2011, ranks the death of Osama bin Laden at number one with almost 10% of all status updates in English mentioning the infamous terrorist leaders death on May 1.

The year was also marked by tragedy with the deaths of both Amy Winehouse and Steve Jobs proving to strike a chord with users of the social media site, ranking at numbers five and seven respectively.

In terms of cultural phenomena planking was perhaps amongst the most unusual and the most significant.

It saw a number of famous faces lie face down in unusual locations after the New Zealand prime minister’s son got the ball rolling with an impromptu lie down under the gaze of his father.

It proved little more than a fad however with mention of the practice dying out as quickly as it began.
