Evgeny Lebedev, the crusading Russian proprietor of the Independent and London Evening Standard newspapers, has called for newspaper owners to unite in order to drag the press out of its present “mire”.

Outlining the need for a “strong response” to the daily “tales of suffering” at the Leveson inquiry Lebedev states that publishers need to come together and self-regulate – or face the imposition of statutory regulation.

To that end Lebedev wrote in The Times: “I plan to invite other proprietors to discuss self-regulation, privacy and reform of our libel laws.”

Lebedev’s call to action comes on the same day as his Journalism Foundation charity launched, a body created to improve standards of press freedom.
