ITV are looking to cash in on the success of their period drama Downton Abbey by printing some of the shows best known catchphrases on a range of merchandise.

One liners such as “What is a weekend?” have been emblazoned upon mugs, calendars and cushions to provide some cheap stocking fillers for fans.

Dame Maggie Smith’s character provides inspiration for the majority of these, notably: “She is not entitled to opinions until she is married - then her husband will tell her what her opinions are.”

Penny Tunnell, of official Downton retailer Past Times, told the Sunday Express: 'People are quick to pick up on standout quotes and sayings from their favourite movies and TV shows and often like to adopt them into their lives.'

Downton Abbey is gearing up for a festive special to air on Christmas day.
