Details of the hotly anticipated iPad 3 have been found buried deep within the source code of Apple’s latest iOS tablet software.

Programming sleuths have unearthed references to ‘iPad3,3’ and ‘iPad2,4’ within the millions of lines of code – indicating that Apple could be beavering away on two different tablet prototypes.

Apple is believed to be investigating the possibility of a slightly smaller form factor for the iPad3 with a 7.85” screen, compensated by a smidgen more girth and a high resolution 2048x1536 retina display ala the iPhone4S.

An upgraded iPad2 could also be in the works.

The iPad2 by contrast has a resolution of just 1024x768.

Manufacturers including Samsung, Sharp and LGD are already manufacturing panels for the devices to meet demand ahead of a suspected March release.
