The BBC’s coverage of next year’s European Championships will reportedly take place from Salford.

The Match of the Day team will cover the tournament, which takes place in Poland and Ukraine next Summer, from the new studio in the north west of England, due to budget cuts, the Sunday Mirror has claimed.

The decision not to send the presenting team of Gary Lineker, Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson has apparently been taken as part of the ‘Delivering Quality First’ being implemented at the BBC.

The Sunday Mirror quotes a source as saying; “The official line is that these are austerity measures. But there are ¬rumours some people don’t fancy ¬spending a month there. Still, it doesn’t seem right the BBC will be covering a massive tournament thousands of miles away in Salford.”

A BBC spokesman added: “The decision is solely based on providing value for ¬money.”
