Following much criticism following the phone hacking scandal at the News of the World and News International, it has emerged that News International chairman James Murdoch has resigned as a director of News Group Newspapers, which publishes The Sun, and Times Newspapers , which publishes The London Times .

News Group Newspapers also published the now defunct News of the World.

It has transpired that Murdoch resigned as director of the companies in September, with some predicting that he could be set to leave the group altogether, and relocate to New York.

Murdoch has faced much scrutiny in recent months over his knowledge and involvement over phone hacking and police corruption allegations, and has faced the Media Select Committee on two occasions.

A spokesperson for News International has stated that he remains as chairman of that company, however.
