America’s intelligence services are increasingly targeting social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, according to a report by the Associated Press.

A social media team are thought to be tracking up to five million tweets a day in an effort to predict when (or if) a nation or region might become engulfed by social unrest.

It follows a stream of internet fueled incidents from the Arab uprisings to the English riots, prompting analysts to attempt to hijack the system and get ahead of the curve.

President Obama himself is said to be briefed on their findings daily.
