Channel 5 is set to appoint ITN to produce its news coverage, replacing Sky.

It is understood the broadcaster is looking to cut costs from its news output, and is trying to finish its contract with Sky – which should end in December 2012 – early.

ITN’s chief executive John Hardie mentioned his desire to win back the contract, which it lost in 2005, in an interview last month with the Guardian. ITN currently produces the news for ITV and Channel 4.
